Oregon has a legal casinos but these are all Tribal casinos. There have been a few attempts to legalize a commercial casino but the last bill was rejected by nearly 70% of votes. The casinos are allowed to offer the regular games that would be expected in a casino. The casinos are very popular and generate a lot of revenue, there does not seem to be an appetite for a commercial casino. There is also no Oregon online casino, the state does not seem to prosecute online players however it is deemed illegal to play online.

History of Casino Gambling in Oregon

Oregon has allowed legal gambling since the 1940’s, starting with horse and dog racing. 1971 saw the state allow charity gaming, allowing for casino style nights to be held but no cash prizes were available. After a federal law change in the 1980’s, Native American casinos began to appear across the state. Attempts have been made to legalize commercial casinos but they have not been very successful.

Oregon Casino Laws History and Facts
YearEvent
1940’sHorse and dog racing is legalized across the state
1971Charitable casino nights were legalized allowing casino nights to take place. The only drawback was that there were no cash prizes.
1973The charity gaming law relaxed to allow for social gaming to take place as long as the host did not profit from the event. You could play poker but not if you had to buy food or drink from the host.
1988The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act legalized tribes and Native Americans to build casinos as long as the state did not have a law that would permit such a building or activity taking place.
1996All nine Oregon tribes have casinos open on their reservation lands.
2012A bill was put to the voters of Oregon for a commercial casino law to be passed. The bill was rejected by 70% of the voters.

Casino Gambling Age in Oregon

The minimum age in Oregon is 21 years old. If a minor is caught gambling, this is considered as a crime and certain fines might be added. Those can vary but they’re usually hundreds of dollars. Community service is also an option and it doesn’t end here – the parents of the minor also fall under the law and could face harsh penalties as well.

  • Legal age for Casino gambling in Oregon is 21 years old. Although some casinos have minimum of 18.
  • Weed Age
Recreational cannabis is not legal in Oregon, there is no minimum age.

Responsible Gambling and Addiction Prevention

Oregon offers several options for problem gamblers. As with many states and initiatives across the world, the aim for many is to explain the warning signs of a problem gambler. This helps people to recognize the issues before they potentially are too late. There are Gamblers Anonymous meetings, a helpline and group or individual counselling and therapy sessions. There are posters and media programs to try and educate people that it’s better to recognize the problem and that it is acceptable to ask for help.

Can I Play Without Deposit?

No deposit opportunities are currently available in Oregon. This doesn’t mean that other sites from outside of the state don’t offer such opportunities to players. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since no deposit bonuses are getting more and more popular across gamblers, but you should be on the look for certain requirements which should be met. In order to always stay on top of this, consider going through the respective T&C’s.

Upcoming Casino Regulation and Expected Changes

Oregon has very little interest in expanding the current casino industry as can be seen by the failure to get a commercial casino legalized. There is also very little appetite for an online casino. They are one of the few states who have explicitly called out internet gambling as illegal, however some offshore sites do still accept Oregon players and nobody has yet been prosecuted for playing. It is not legal and therefore not recommended. It is extremely unlikely that Oregon will see an online casino in the near future.
